Every time Onix sends a bike in for a test with the cycling media it is safe in the knowledge that due to all the hard work done with our testing program,using top professionals like Rob Hayles we have done everything we possibly could to make our bikes the very best they can be.


The latest outstandingly positive review for the Onix Black RH follows hot on the heals of our very strong showing with the Onix Aurious for the 2012 Bike Of The Year. 
If proof were needed that our testing program works then these latest reviews certainly provide it.


At Onix we always go that extra mile on every aspect of the company.


To go off on a tangent slightly take our QR code for example. We could like most other company's just produce a generic black code that would do the job of directing customers to our website.
We had the same philosophy with the code as our bikes, lets work to do something different and do the very best we can, we call it the Onix Ethos and it will never change.

The theme for this particular review was bikes with a famous name attached. We obviously qualified with our Rob Hayles Signature Range.The roll call for the test beared some of the biggest and most established names from the cycling world.

The review below speaks for itself so I wont waste time talking about it. For a new brand like Onix to beat the likes of Merckx & Cipollini among others really backs up our credentials as one of THE brands to watch.

The aim of our testing program with the Onix Black RH was to provide a real all rounder. Good enough to race but forgiving enough to appeal to the sportive rider as well. Rob was adamant that the split was to be 70% on the side of performance. The reason I brought someone of Robs expertise into the fold was to be able to bring out bikes totally fit for purpose and this review shows we absolutely nailed it.

Scotland's first consumer bike show for every cyclist

Onix Aurious 2012 Bike Of The Year Review

The fact that we were asked to send a bike into the Cycling Plus 2012 bike of the year was in itself an indication of how far the Onix brand has come in a very short time.

Our testing program is really starting to bear fruit and the Cycling Plus Onix Aurious bike of the year review backs that up. We spend months testing all different combinations of frames, forks and carbon and we get top riders to tell us what they think. As you all know we now have World Champion and Olympic medal holder Rob Hayles as our chief tester which I know is going to continue to ensure we keep bringing out high quality products in the future.




In an industry where you live and die by how your bike performs it just makes sense to me that you do EVERYTHING you can to bring out the best bike you can. I could just take a nice looking frame with good geometry ,put a nice paint job on it and put it out there but that goes against everything Onix stands for.

In testing  we found the difference in the performance of frames with the same geometry was staggering.. If your just bringing out frames without testing them then your trusting to luck that its going to be a good frame and that says to me your not passionate about your product.


Looking at both our 2011 bikes (the Aurious and the Azzuro as well as 2012’s Rob Hayles signature range), we found the difference in frames performance with the same geometry was staggering, and although Rob didn't test the Aurious and Azzuro bikes let me assure you that the person who did is of the same stature and quality of rider.

At the start of the 2011 season we also started supporting pro rider Dan Patten, who couldn't make his mind up whether he liked the Azzuro or Aurious best so he choose to race on both of them. Dan rode a full season thrashing both models through the rigours of a full Belgian racing season and they never flinched; you need a very robust frame to survive a year of cobbles!

In fact, every time a rider who really knows his stuff threw his leg over one they enthused about the bike’s performance.  Take Ken Jones from Bioracer for example. Ken first rode an Onix in 2011 when he took an Azzuro out for a ride & immediately took one to ride the Paris-Roubaix sportive with Sean Kelly.

Ken then requested to try an Aurious at the end of the season. Well the result of that was the Onimpex Bioracer Team riding the Aurious in 2012. Ken and his team mates are veteran racers and have seen it all – they know a good bike when they ride one.  We also had some great comments back from John Cosgrove (AKA ‘Cozzy’) who normally wouldn't enthuse over a bike, but he did over ours.

The Aurious review below is another big stepping stone forward to where I want to take Onix in the future. I’m immensely proud of my bikes and the care and attention to detail that goes into them before I present them to you, the customer.

The Onix Black RH will be in the next issue of Cycling Plus (April?) and is the first review for one of our Rob Hayles signature range. I am safe in the knowledge with Rob's input we did everything we possibly could to make those bikes the best they could be and hopefully that will be born out in another positive review for Onix.

Though Onix describe the Aurious as a sportive bike, when we first put it through its paces last year we found it was more than just a comfortable cruiser. Yes, there’s a nod to sportive riding in its shape, with a 74° seat angle and 73° head tube, but its performance and handling were much racier than we’d expected. For the Bike of the Year test we requested a higher specification, including a more race-orientated Shimano 105 drivetrain and great quality Shimano RS80 carbon clincher wheels.

The Aurious chassis is highly sculpted, with a triangular-profile down tube and a head tube junction that’s so substantial that despite its standard 1-1/8in top and bottom cups, there’s no tangible loss of stiffness compared to the tapered designs favoured by many of Onix’s rivals. At 156mm, the head tube is slightly taller than an out-and-out race bike but still offers ample scope to get a low position in the drops for fast efforts while cheating the wind.

The overall ride impression is one of solidity. For a sportive bike, that’s not necessarily a good thing, but those who value speed over comfort will revel in the Onix’s point-and-shoot handling. Putting the Aurious into the twistiest fast descent on our test route was an absolute joy. Even in cold icy conditions it held its line, with no tremors to unbalance our progress, and this added bags of confidence to push that little bit harder.

The upgraded wheels give the Aurious a lighter touch, too. This is felt most on sharp out-of-the-saddle efforts on climbs, where pickup through the drivetrain is more immediate and the ride is far more rewarding. The Fizik Arione saddle, another upgrade, gives more scope to move around: you can get up on the nose for prolonged climbing efforts and slide back to get lower for descents. Having more rear end real estate also helps temper the rigid nature of the ride; the Onix isn’t the smoothest bike over coarse road surfaces but in this guise with lighter wheels and more comfortable saddle it’s a vast improvement over the previous model we tested.

After our first experience with the Aurious, we’d have looked elsewhere for a ‘big ride’ bike. But over our 85-mile test loop this uprated version proved much more usable, with better all-round potential. Onix may be a new brand but they’ve proved they can make exciting and great quality bikes; with their recent team-up with Rob Hayles, we can’t wait to give their new signature range a try. If they can successfully combine the excitement of the Aurious with the input of a seasoned pro, they could have a real contender for 2013’s Bike of the Year.

Energy Versus Diet

Im going to start this blog by saying that I have always been a big believer in energy products.
I think that most of us feel if we dont have our powder in our drinks or our recovery drink we might just fade away into nothingness..
We need something to make up for that lack of natural talent :-(


If you are one of my followers on social media you will know that due to my busy schedule I have been struggling to get out on the bike and get the miles in.


About 2 months ago I was out with a very experienced racer who said its all a load of marketing hogwash.. "get yer diet right and you dont need to spend money on that crap" were pretty much his exact words.


When I got home I totted up how much I spend on energy & recovery products throughout a year and it was a bit of a shocker I have to say.


So as a little bit of an experiment for the last 2 months where my fitness has not been great I have rode with just water in my bottles and a pint of milk after a ride. One thing I did do though was have a high carb meal the night before usually containing pasta or rice.


On the few occasions I have got out on the bike I have been doing 50-60mile rides always pushing on.Thats not massive miles I know but considering my lack of time on the bike its enough.
 I have to say I have not felt any different. I have not bonked once and every time when I have finished a ride I can certainly feel it in my legs. However after my pint of milk and a solid nutritious meal I wake up the next day feeling right as rain with no soreness in my legs at all.  


Now im not suggesting that energy products have no merit, it looks like I may be doing London to Paris later this year which is 130miles a day for 3 days running and dont worry my bottles will be full of isotonic electrolytes and my pockets will be stuffed full of bars and gels..


All im saying is maybe we put to much emphasis on it and a good balanced diet is more than half the battle..

Rob Hayle's Onix Photoshoot ( Behind The Scenes)

Since putting out the press release about the new Onix Black Rob Hayles Signature range of bikes things have gone crazy at Onix.


The plan was to have some shots of Rob with the bikes ready for the press release but due to a late change in Mark Cavendish's schedule we had to cancel the shoot till a week later. Robs main job these days is working with Mark on his training and PR schedule for Team Sky.


Firstly you would be very surprised at the amount of organisation that is required to put this day together. Our Spokesmen PR agency worked flat out with our photographer James Maloney from merseypics for about 3 weeks in preparation for the shoot. Also myself and James spent a day scouting locations in the peaks for the shoot.


Finally the day arrived and the weather forecast looked grim but more about that later. 


James had acquired the help of fellow top snapper Dan Kenyon to help on the day and they headed straight to the cricket club we had hired to set up the studio and I headed to Robs house to drop off his kit to wear. One thing I have to say about Rob Hayles is that for all his cycling achievements im probably more impressed with his barista skills, Wow that guy makes a great cup of coffee and he made me a couple upon my early arrival at his house, mucho needed !

After a chat with Robs wife Vicky we headed off for the 5 minute drive to the cricket club to meet up with the guys. Upon Arrival there was a hive of activity with James and Dan setting things up. Me and Rob brought the bikes in and Rob was immediately blown away by the quality of look and finish on the bikes.Rob tested all the products in raw carbon form and although he had seen the designs of the paint on a computer photoshop image this was actually the 1st time he had seen the finished produt, it was fair to say he was very very pleased.
He immediately got changed and started to fettle the bikes to get his riding position perfect.

There have been many highs and lows on the Onix journey for me personally to get the brand to where it is today but when Rob came out of the Ladies (yes ladies) in his Onix Kit it was a real moment of realisation of how far we have come in essentially 13 months.

James and Dan soon had the studio set up and the 1st thing on the agenda was an interview with Rob and myself talking about how we hooked up and why Rob has joined Onix and put his name to the bikes. Luckily we managed to nail that in a few takes with drying up or bursting out laughing.That was my work done in front of the camera for the day and now it was time for the shots of Rob in his Onix Kit.

Rob has done this thousands of times before so he knew the dance of what is required and strutted the required pose's with a plom.

Next up was to get some shots of Rob on the bike which meant getting the rollers out. James And Dan worked ferociously around Rob as he powered away on the rollers. I was mainly outside taking calls from The Gadget Show who wanted a bike to take to Monaco in less than 24hrs. Its great that our reputation has grown so much that we are getting contacted by these sort of organisations but this kind of timeline is ridiculous. We pulled it off by the way !

While I was outside conferring with the Gadget Show it started to sleet and rain to add to the sub zero temperatures. The last shots were of Rob standing with the bikes and doing some video talking about the bikes strengths and what he found when testing them. We hope to release this in around 2 weeks time.

Rob does Camp, A little to well to be honest !

So that was a wrap as they say and time for dinner. Rob invited us all to his house where he knocked up the most amazing homemade Pea And Ham Soup, Actually im being too kind Errrrr Rob Heated up his wifes amazing homemade Pea And Ham Soup but he did magic up some more amazing coffee. We all sat eating and watching Cav win another stage of the Tour Of Qatar on Eurosport as the weather outside just got worse.

It was clear that our plans to shoot on Winnats Pass & surrounding area was a non starter firstly for Robs safety and secondly it was covered in low cloud and mist. For the projects we have in production though we had to get some outside shots of Rob on the bike outdoors. Rob recommended a piece of Road not to far away where we could get some great shots in 1 take from the back of the team car.

When we got there it was effin freezing with sleet coming down. I have to say that Rob was a true pro and just got on with it as were James and Dan. The conditions were not good for anyone but especially for Rob who was having to brave the worst of the conditions.

Considering we did this as quickly as possible so we could get Rob back in the warmth of the car we still got some great shots and video. The shots have a hardcore look about them being shot in such extreme conditions.

As Rob arrived back at the car on the last run he jumped off the bike and exclaimed "I Love This F***in bike" before jumping back in the car to thaw out.When I see Robs reaction and enthusiasm for the RH bikes it just fills me with such pride in what we have managed to produce.

So that was that, James and Dan headed home and I took Rob back to his gaff.

Upon arrival Vicky insisted I try the cakes she was baking for there daughters school competition. 

I consider myself an expert in this matter, its a hard job but someone's gotta do it.

We can now get on with the work of advertising and editing of videos which I hope you will start seeing around early March.

Well what a totally mad 4 days I have had since the press release went out on Friday about our new 2012 Onix Black RH Signature bikes.

Firstly, although after months of hard work Myself & Rob already knew the bikes performed to the highest standard and looked fantastic but we have still been overwhelmed by the response across the board to the 2 new bikes.


The cycling media has covered the story in a big way and there is still more to come in the coming weeks. Also they are all very keen to get the mitts on these Rob Hayles tested machines requesting test bikes as soon as possible.
The reaction on social media has been fantastic, this is always a great barometer that you are doing things right as it can be vicious if you are seen to be taking the mickey , doing a bad job or ripping people off.

I keep saying this over and over again "Everything I do is to make Onix as good as it can be"

• We have a robust testing program using riders from the very top of the sport to make our frames ride and perform to there very best.
• We could have gone with the easier and cheaper paint schemes but we went the extra mile with more complex Matt and gloss decals to stand out from the crowd.
• We do as much as we can to involve our followers,current and potential customers in what we are doing via social media

Thinking of cutting corners or saying that will do just does not appear in my thought process at all.

And now we have brought in Triple Olympic medallist & Double World Champion on the track and former National road race champion Rob Hayles as Advisor, Test Rider and brand ambassador to Onix.

What a coup for a new upcoming brand like Onix and I cant tell you how excited I am about what Onix and Rob can achieve together in the future !!
Robs experience and expertise is going to make such a difference to the development of future Onix products and that is why I have brought him into the Onix family. 
Its another big piece of the jigsaw to get Onix to where we believe we can take it !

So how did we do it??

Well again as I have been saying for a long time we try to get as many riders from the top of the sport to test our potential combinations of frames,forks,carbon and give us feedback on them. We have done this in the past with a number of well known riders but we could never name them as they had current team contracts and subsequently had team bike sponsors.

In September I was tipped off that Rob was planning to retire at the end of 2011 and I immediately realised that there may be an opportunity to get Rob to test our 2012 bikes and name him as the tester for Onix because his Endura contract would run out on the 31st December.

So I spoke to Rob briefly on the phone and set up a first meeting for a coffee at Coffee Fix in Manchester. I can tell you that its always a strange feeling when im going to meet a cycling icon that you have admired for many years. Rob arrived and we really did hit it off straight away chatting about many things before we got onto the subject of Onix. We have children of a very similar age as well as a shared interest in innovation which made for an easy atmosphere.

Finally it was time for me to tell Rob of my proposal for him and went into a passionate tirade from the heart of where Onix has come from,what I have been through personally, what I want it to stand for and where I see it going in the future.

Id like to think that Rob was impressed straight away with my passion & approach to not cutting corners and always going that extra mile to get things right.It seemed that way and he even commented on the carbon finish on the Onix Team Car which he liked.This backed up my mantra of doing the best we can on everything we do. I had also brought the prototype 2012 test framesets with me which I showed to Rob and he recognised the quality straight away.

So 2 hrs later Rob Hayles agreed to:-

• Test ride our 2012 prototype framesets
• Give feedback on the performance of the said frameset combinations.
• On the 1st January 2012 we name Rob Hayles as the test rider for Onix bikes.

I drove home from that meeting that night on cloud nine and had a few beers to celebrate..

What happened next?


It took about a week to get the bikes to Rob in his specification for him to test. In that week my entrepreneurial mind had gone into overdrive but I had to wait till Rob had ridden the bikes before putting my idea to him. 
The first bit of feedback I got was a text message from Rob which said the following


"I did a couple of hours today,Really like it & it didnt look out of place next to Cav on his venge"


WHAT !!!!  I spoke to Rob immediately and indeed he had been out training with Cav and Mark had been all over our frame having a right good nosey and liked what he saw...AMAZING ! 


A period of time went by where Rob rode the bikes using all manner of different frame & fork combinations and reported back with incredibly positive feedback on the ride and performance. Almost everytime I spoke to Rob he waxed lyrical about how good the bikes were and I could tell he was really enjoying the process of testing for us.
The Onix twitter ride was coming up so I needed to go over to Robs house to pick up the bikes as I was going to ride one on the twitter ride in The Peak District.
Upon arrival Rob invited me in for a coffee and we chatted for a long time about how good the bikes were and the bike industry. Now that I knew he really really rated the product I threw my idea to him about joining us on the Onix journey and putting his name on the bikes for 2012 as well as my vision for us working together in the future.


Rob love's the whole ethos of Onix and he would not put his name to something unless it met his very high standards and agreed to join Onix.
2012 actually turned out to be a very small part of our conversation and all I can say is we have a grand plan to work together for many years to come on a number of exciting ideas for Onix in the future.

After some research at Eurobike looking for bike trends I designed the paint schemes myself, its the part of running Onix that I find most enjoyable and rewarding.I wanted the bikes to be right on trend and be striking which I feel we have achieved.
 I cant tell you the feeling when you see your vision come to life for the 1st time !


And of course signed off by Mr Hayles himself in an understated way in keeping with the design

So there you go its all been revealed at last and I dont have to keep secrets and talk in riddles anymore :-)
I can honestly say that this has been the hardest thing to keep secret, im rubbish at keeping secrets.

With Bioracer we have designed a new 2012 Onix Black RH kit to match the bikes that we think is extremely cool and will compliment the bikes perfectly. We are always wanting to be right on trend with everything we do with the brand !!

Just over 1 year ago hardly anyone knew about the brand and no one would take Onix seriously..
A printer of 22 years with no experience in the bike trade, 
You gave up a well paid job.....Your mad they all said..


Well after 12 months of working passionately 24/7 look where we are today.. What a story !!!


I have put my heart and soul into these products to make them the very best they could be and Im immensely proud of them.


I am totally committed to continuing to make Onix the most exciting ambitious bike brand in the UK and I dont see any limits as to where this amazing journey will take us in the future..
